THE EVENT

The Marina Abramović Institute Takeover turned Queen Elizabeth Hall into an immersive, self-led landscape of long-durational performance across every part of the building. The programme brought together Marina Abramović and a cohort of international artists exploring endurance, presence and participation.

DRIFT provided comprehensive videography and equipment coverage across the multi-venue, multi-day event, capturing performances in real-time. The team also filmed an in-depth conversation with Marina Abramović, which formed the basis of the documentary-style film What is Performance Art?. This footage explored her creative practice, the evolution of performance art, and the takeover's innovative use of hidden spaces.

Navigating simultaneously across auditoriums, backstage spaces and foyers for long-durational, self-led performances demanded agile, unobtrusive coverage that respected both artists and audience. The resulting film distils these complex, ephemeral encounters into a focused, intimate portrait of Marina Abramović’s practice and the takeover’s unique atmosphere, amplifying the project’s reach beyond the live event.
